Let me start by saying, before you attempt to learn staff, I HIGHLY reccomend at least going through the lessons in single red that are labeled "basics". Otherwise, you will have a much harder time understanding what I am trying to say here.
I think the best thing to cover first is the strength of staff. Some argue that it is as powerful as single Red, because it hits so hard. I am not here to tell you different. Here are the facts.
Staff is restricted to yellow stance no matter what.
In your staff mode, you do more damage only because of the fact that two blades hit your target rather than one. Unfortunately with that power you sacrifice range. Because of this, a seasoned Red user will usually win out over someone using staff only with the staff stance.
The single saber stance of staff solves the range problem, while sacrificing power and damage. It is good to know you have a way to at least make a dent in the huge advantage that Red users have over you in the area of range.
In either case, you will still have the advantage of speed. If a single user decides to use yellow against you (a staff user) the fight will very quickly end in your favor. Chances are, if you are facing a single saberist, they will use Red as long as your are in staff stance, and they might switch to yellow if you switch to single saber stance.
If you are facing duals, you have an advantage again in power. Duals tend to be a bit faster but more fragile than staff. This fight will be about patience and reading blocks (I will talk more about reading blocks in another lesson).
If you are fighting another staff user, it will be a fight cometely determined by reading blocks.
Disclaimer: staff is my worst saber, but I do know A lot about the game in general and will hopeully be able to help you all out with staff as well
