First off I play hard offence, passive is not my style.
If you are going to pick up the staff, good on you! From here maybe you can pick up at least a few things that may help you to learn it.
I assume you can at least aim your saber and poke in a direction that you think will earn a kill so I don't want to bother with that. What this is about is the basic delay. With the staff you do not need to do much more than press A, W, or D. Not even at the same time. You do not need to jump, you can in fact punish jumpers easy with this if you just look up and anticipate the landing zone.
Learning the delay is the start, putting it to use with your own footwork is how you will make it shine. To start off you need to put out an attack, the most simple is just a D swing into an A swing. Note you do not want to link the attacks, you need to hold off for just a second with the A swing to create the new set of swings. After a few try's you will feel the lag time of the delay.
Video of what I think I'm talking about.
The first frame is just that, D swing into an A swing. You can add onto the A swing if you've broken into the enemy's defense by stringing A into D. The third frame starts with an AW swing, I use this more if I'm already close and think it will bring a deflect. Once you understand the deflects you can get from your swings you might want to try it. If you have the delay down, you can use it to get close enough to the enemy to maneuver behind them for the A delay. CRITICAL HIT.
There is a lot more to the two handed saber, but using this delay is a large part of it.
