Whenever Jan.Slo wants me to explain something he always jumps into things like poking and parrying, as you've seen. He seems to not want to go for the basics and I fear if he starts trying to poke before he can aim a swing properly, he'll be missing all over the place and getting nowhere. If he starts trying to parry random people he fights, I'm sure he'll get cut down more often that not because he's not ready for the technique.
I'm trying to stress the basics, but he always wants to do advanced things.
When I was learning red style, I made sure I could hit people and that I had good footwork. Poking and such came later and that worked out great for me.
Any suggestions?

I would try emphasizing the lessons he needs to master to get to the next rank. If he cant do a D swing every time on command without mistakes, he has no business trying to poke LL
